Remembering when …

September 24, 2022

It seems an age ago now, our travels across Canada, down to New York and back across the States to San Francisco, all by train. It was back in 2015, and at the time we fully intended to do the trip again, or at least the Canada part, in reverse order and in winter. But Covid put paid to plans not only for train travel in North America but also to international travel of any sort. Yes borders are reopening now. But probably not for us. Of course one never says never. But in the meantime we’ve been reflecting on past journeys, and realising just how privileged we’ve been. And now L has recorded his experience of the Canada/USA trip in a Kindle ebook, The Zephyr and Me: Across Canada and the US by train.

While this is Lew’s account of our shared journey, the writing of it rekindled many great memories and provoked much laughter as we recalled the events of that six-week holiday. It started with a week in Vancouver, followed by the trip on Via Canada’s Canadian to Toronto for our first stopover, on to Quebec for our next stopover, then back to Montreal where we caught Amtrak’s Adirondack to New York for a ten-day stopover. From there it was the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago and a change of train to the famed California Zephyr which had inspired the whole trip. Our journey ended with a few days in San Francisco before we embarked on the 12-hour flight back home to New Zealand.

If you’re partial to a bit of vicarious travel laced with humour and set during the year we all thought Trump had no chance, then do check out The Zephyr and Me on Amazon Kindle. It’s a short book but packed with fun and good memories. We hope you enjoy it as much as we’ve enjoyed writing and producing it.
