Off overseas

Farewell Wellington . . . view from the Ferronia

11 October 2023

So, yesterday was F day. You can choose whatever word you like for that to describe your day, but for us it stands for ‘farewell’ — we’re off overseas for a fortnight. Well, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, I know. We were off over Cook Strait for a couple of weeks in the South Island. (By the by, have you ever wondered why it is ‘the’ South Island, or ‘the’ North Island?)

All went smoothly for the off (as nautical L would have it). Given the weather lately, we wouldn’t have been surprised to wake up on the day to hear ferry services had been cancelled due to a raging southerly. But not a problem. It was up and over the hill, coffee catchup with friends, and a sailing that was smooth as.

First stop was Picton where we caught up with L’s SIL over pasta, wine, and good discussion where we put the world to rights. Then to our budget accommodation at the Sequoia Lodge. This was a small no-frills cabin — no cooking facitilies, but clean, warm and with an ensuite — in our view, good value for money ($78).

Just finishing up breakfast at Cafe Gusto in Picton, and we’ll be on our way to Nelson.
