A city day today, although it involved a decent amount of walking, and not all of it on urban pavements – our chosen destination for the day was a walk up the Centre of New Zealand. Just to be clear, this is the name of a hill in central Nelson, not a locationally accurate description. It’s so-named because the top of the hill was a central survey point in the 1800s.
We also checked out the Suter Art Gallery – what a great asset for the city. I’ve mentioned before the reproductions of Nelson art works placed on buildings around the streets, and which, I believe, are curated by the Suter (photos of a couple of them below). After lunch at the gallery café, we had a wander around the adjacent botanical garden. That all took care of the first 10,000 steps.
Apart from that, it was a bit of retail therapy. L took advantage of the remaindered rack at Farmers while I limited myself to some insurance for tomorrow’s visit to the Nelson lakes, in the form of insect repellent and anti-scratch cream, should the repellent fall short of its publicity.
So, tomorrow it is farewell to Nelson as we move on to Blenheim, via Lake Rotoiti and the Wairau Valley. We’ve liked Nelson and we’re already planning a return visit.
