I won’t say we saved the best till last, because that’s not true. But L did have a little surprise for the final stage of our Top of the South road trip.
We had a leisurely start to the day, with a coffee and croissant at Flo & Co. Kaikoura was looking good, all sun and a few white clouds, and snowy peaks showing through fog.
The journey north, was usual, along SH1, but only as far as Blenheim. There we took a secondary road to Picton that took in Rarangi and Port Underwood. It’s a narrow windy road with lots of ups, overs and downs. The middle bit is about 20 km of shingle road – luckily not too much other traffic. The road wound through bush and plantation pines, and at times through farmland and past bays and beaches. It was all new country to me. I particularly liked Rarangi Beach, with its flower-covered sand. It was great to finish the circle back to Piction with a different route.
Ooh ah, as I write, I’m watching the netball live scoring on Stuff. A win to the Silver Ferns, 53 to 50. Yay for the Ferns. Not enough of a margin to get the Constellation Cup, but enough for a 2-all draw for the series.
On that high note, I’ll end this post. Photos to come.
