Not all State Highway 1

The coastal road heading south from Oamaru

October 18, 2024

We left Timaru mid-morning-ish and trundled along to Dunedin, mostly on SH1 but also taking the secondary coastal roads where we could–Oamaru to Kakanui and Waianakarua, and the Coast Road through Karitane to Warrington and Seacliff. It’s a fair while since we’ve travelled south along SH1 so lots of memories rekindled. And we enjoyed the secondary coastal road from Oamaru to Waianakarua. It was nice to dawdle along, not quite sure where or even if we’d come to SH1 again. We zipped along SH1 between Dunedin and Timaru a fair number of times in the eighties, and I never realised the coast road existed. It was all about getting from A to B in those days, and to be fair, it still mostly is. Pity about our timing though. Most everyone we planned to catch up with is elsewhere for the weekend.

Oamaru harbour, our lunch stop
Can never resist a pic of an old tin shed. Oamaru harbour again
A bit blurry–taken from the car. I think this is coming in to Kakanui.
I rather like this font. M–any guesses as to what it is? Also like the colour of the building.
Karitane. Great example of coastal planting
Karitane again, taken from the same position.
